Learning to make a net bag

One thing that has interested me for a while is learning how to make a net. I thought I would start with a “simple” project which is to make a net bag (so I can carry my leg wraps).

I found a wonderful video from Sally Pointer on YouTube and that was very helpful. I also bought a kit from her website. It comes with a net shuttle, gauge tool and unbleached linen thread (that looks like old school brown string).

Following her instructions from YouTube has been very helpful and I was able to make good progress (and even do it on the train while traveling to/from work). I have also learned a couple of lessons

1. Tension is important to get even spacing of holes. Just like with weaving (and most fibre crafts), maintaining tension helps get the spacing in the net to be even.

2. Mistakes happen, but because it’s all knots tying it should be easy enough to recover after the fact (either remove the excess string or add an extra line to make the hole smaller).

3. This takes up very little space so can easily be done on the move (unlike most weaving).

Overall I am very pleased with the project and the finished product.
